Where do I begin? Let's see. I love food. Actually, I love healthy food. Make that healthy and delicious food. Healthy and delicious food that makes you feel happy inside. That's it. That's what I love, what I live for and what I want to share with all of you.
I'm not a trained chef or a certified health educator or a expert in food and nutrition by any means (well not yet anyways)... I am just a graduate student with an undying passion for cooking, eating and living healthy and being happy. And what's the point of having a passion if you don't share it with everyone? Exactly.
After graduating from Johns Hopkins in May 2010, I began graduate school at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and I am currently pursuing a Master of Science in Public Health degree in Nutrition coordinated with a Registered Dietician certification. So by January 2012, I will officially have a whopping 6 letters after my name (MSPH, RD) and can consider myself a professional. What do I plan to do with all those letters? I'm not really sure yet, but I do know that I want to do community-based, public health nutrition work, and definitely something having to do with food!
A Maryland native, I have been living in Baltimore for the past 5 years and I am absolutely loving the city life (and did I mention I'm a big Ravens fan?!) I live in a row house with a total of 6 people (4 girls, 2 guys) and 2 animals (my adorable cat, Misty, and new dog, Cambia). It's definitely a full house, but it's great because we all get along and there sure is never a dull moment. My roommates were actually the inspiration for this blog because they always come home from work or school to find me in the kitchen cooking with some vegetable or ingredient they have never seen or heard of. They frequently ask something along the lines of, "What in the world are you cooking now?" I know they think I'm crazy, but I also know that anytime they try anything I make.. they love it! My roommates are fortunate enough to get to see and taste what I cook because they see me everyday, but I wanted to start blogging at the thought of being able to share my ideas and recipes with friends and family whom I don't see everyday. And so this blog was born.
What do sunflowers have to do with anything? Well sunflowers are my absolute favorite flower (my friends and family can attest to this minor obsession of mine), and I like to say that I have several similarities with sunflowers- I'm tall (okay-that was cheesy), my favorite color is yellow, I am inviting and welcoming, I love being around others, and I always look on the brighter side of life. Okay maybe it's a little weird to compare myself to a sunflower, but anyway, it is pretty appropriate that I have been nicknamed by some friends: "Sunny" or "Alli-Sunny," hence the title of this blog. I always try to "stay on the sunny side of life" as that old camp song goes, because life is too short not to.
So then how does food play into all this? I am true believer in the powerful ability of food to affect our moods, our health and our overall outlook on life. I like to think that a big part of the reason why I am such a fun-loving, optimistic, balanced, healthy and happy person is because I take great pride and joy in cooking and eating foods that make me feel good inside. I cook with fresh, local, and sustainable ingredients as often as I can; I appreciate the natural world around me and am mindful of where my food comes from and how it was grown or raised; and I keep things as simple, cheap and delicious as possible. So with this blog, I really hope to share with everyone a wide variety of recipes for foods that I cook and eat myself- recipes that are creative, easy, tasty, healthy, and affordable, but most importantly that make you feel great about eating. I will also be sharing many healthy and sustainable living tips of ways to live more within our means and in a way that is more sustainable for this planet and for future generations. Once you start becoming more conscious of what you eat, you will certainly become more aware of how everything in this beautiful world is connected and how important it is that we are good stewards of the natural world, because without it there is no food, no water, no life as we know it.
Now let's get one thing straight before I end this long introductory post- I'm not a crazy environmentalist, a hippie, a vegetarian, a liberal (or a conservative), or any other label that may come to mind. I don't like labels because I don't fit any of them and I don't ever want to. I'm just me- Alli-Sunny, a 22-year-old hard-working student, a creative and independent thinker and lover of all things that make people feel healthy and happy and that make this world a better place.
So open up your mind and your heart and start enjoying this wonderful life and all that it has to offer! Happy cooking!
